About the event

Join us at Vale Ondula on Sunday, 9th of February 2025, for an inspiring hands-on pruning workshop led by renowned permaculture designer Helder Valente. With his deep roots in permaculture and sustainability, Helder will share his expertise on pruning trees through the lens of regenerative design principles.


About the Workshop

Do you care for fruit or other trees and want to ensure their health and productivity? This workshop is for you! Designed for both beginners and those with experience, Helder will guide us through the why, when, and how of pruning from a permaculturist’s perspective. Combining theory and practice, you’ll leave with the skills and confidence to care for your trees sustainably.


About the Facilitator

Helder Valente is a highly respected permaculture designer and educator, with decades of experience working in diverse climates and learning from pioneers such as Bill Mollison, Geoff Lawton, and Rosemary Morrow. As the founder of the New School Permaculture, Helder has been teaching Permaculture Design Courses (PDCs) and forest courses around the world. Born and raised in rural Portugal, not far from Vale Ondula, Helder brings a wealth of local expertise and a lifetime of connection to nature.


About Vale Ondula

Nestled in the scenic hills of northern Portugal, Vale Ondula is a thriving permaculture living lab and eco-community. We are dedicated to regenerating ecosystems and fostering community, making it the perfect setting for this workshop.


Workshop Content

  • Why we prune and the role of pruning in tree health

  • When pruning is necessary and the best times for different tree types

  • Core principles and techniques of pruning from a permaculture perspective

  • Hands-on practice in pruning


What to Bring

  • Comfortable clothes and sturdy, closed shoes

  • Sharp pruning tools (scissors, saws, etc.)

  • Pen & paper to take notes

  • A dish to share for the potluck lunch


Programme

  • 09:30 – 10:00: Arrival and welcome

  • 10:00 – 12:30: Theory and practical pruning session

  • 12:30 – 13:30: Shared potluck lunch

  • 13:30 – 16:00: Theory and practical pruning session


Contribution

  • Adults: Sliding scale of €35 to €45

  • Children: Free. We’ll have a dedicated childminder on-site to keep an eye on the little ones, so parents can fully participate—larger contributions from families  are encouraged to help support this service.
